Motivational Interviewing

“A collaborative, goal orientated style of communication with particular attention to the language of change. It is designed to strengthen personal motivation for and commitment to a specific goal by eliciting the person’s own reasons for change within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion”
(Miller and Rolllnick 2012)
I provide bespoke training workshops and coaching in Motivational interviewing.

This is a well recognised evidence-based approach when working with clients towards behaviour and attitude change.

This approach is particularly useful and effective for working with clients who seem to be unmotivated and difficult to engage. Workshop contents and methods are based on the needs of the participants. The timescales can range from ½ day introduction to three and four day courses.

For upcoming workshops, see below.

Experience

Clients

I am a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) and lecture at Sheffield Hallam University (SHU), predominantly in MI and Behaviour Change.

I also provide bespoke MI training and coaching to a variety of professionals including: Case Managers, OTs, GPs, Physiotherapists, Public Health Nurse, Vocational Rehabilitation Specialists, Solicitors, Counsellors and Drug and Alcohol Workers.

As a brain injury specialist, OT and Counsellor I incorporate MI into my own practice extensively.

I provide training to a variety of organisations. This is tailored according to their needs and the client group they work with. For example, when I am working with  neurological specialists, I incorporate the evidence base and specific application to practice with this particular client group and the participants’ role with them.

The duration of training varies from ½ day to a 6 day course, followed by one-to-one coaching. I would recommend a minimum of two days to enable participants to be able to get to grips with the concept and begin to use some of the strategies.

  • Sheffield Teaching Hospitals
